The Color Red

This week has been filled with the color red, blame it on Valentine's Day, love in the air or just the popularity of the incorporating the color red into any outfit.
We went out with some friends the other night and I must say it was a good ole time! I realized how much older I'm getting, because we lasted downtown about an hour. Haha.

I wanted to wear something a little sassy and girly at the same time, but the colder weather puts a damper on any fun ideas. I have had these "UK" blue pants since last spring and they haven't really fit. I finally decided to rock them tonight, SUCCESS! Eating clean does pay off, now if I can get back into my gym routine at a new gym I will be set! It's another adorable outfit that doesn't break the bank!

Sequin Black Tank Top: Target $4.50
Jeweled Blue Bracelet: Target $10
Royal Blue Cigarette Pants: NY& Co. $21
Black Pumps: DSW $11
Leopard Cuffed Blazer (below): Nordstrom Rack $25

Besides the outfit, we had some yummy drinks at a new bar! Henry Clay! Very classy!

One of Jason's best friends is in school at UK and his girlfriend and I get a long like peas and carrots. We are enough alike to have on similar outfits and pull out the SAME Lilly Pulitzer koozie at the bar. Haha we died when that happened. She is a total sweetheart and I'm thankful for that every day. We have all had your significant other be friends or girlfriends of friends just not your kinda people. Not this time! :)

This is J and I at Henry Clay. As you can see, RED LIPS! I finally gave in and wore them for something other than theatrical performances. (hehe) What do you think?

Here is a little tip on the lipstick. Trends in colors are great, but who wants to buy the MAC or Chanel version of a color you will never wear again? I picked this up at CVS, it was free by the way because of my CVS rewards bucks if you don't shop there check it out and get an employee to explain the rewards. It's Wet n Wild but it's like a stain! Which was great because as soon as J saw my lips he stepped back like no way are you kissing me! I laughed and landed one on him, NOTHING! It's great!

Do you wear red lipstick? What's your favorite color/brand?

ps. my nails were also red last week, this is pretty normal for me though, I love classic colors nudes, pinks or reds are usually my pick. Thinking pink for this week! :)

The Gluten Free Experiment

I have been wanting to try some Gluten Free (GF from now on) options but never had the opportunity (guts) to try them. Last night J came up to visit me and I wanted something easy and simple but also GF. I searched Trader Joes and didn't see anything that was really appetizing, so of course my next stop was Whole Foods.

My Goals:
- GF pizza
- with meat
- most likely not dairy free
- looked appetizing
- under $15 (what we would spend to order it)

After lots of searching and back and forth...this is what I ended up with. Against The Grain!
(It was $11.99!!)

J doesn't really do (care about) GF, but I was super excited to try it. This is what the pizza looked like prior to added things. Oops!

There wasn't enough meat on the pizza so I added turkey sausage and some cheddar (all I had) cheese to bind it to the pizza. We wanted it crispy so I put it right on the rack for about 15 minutes. It smelled SO good!

The finished product looked JUST like a regular pizza and smelled amazing! The final test was next...

Obviously it was an Italian themed night, so I added a salad and wine. I was proud of the set up!

The verdict: AMAZING! The pizza tasted so similar to regular pizza and it was super easy. We were full after two small slices. I was impressed that we liked the GF version and I will definitely be trying this again. Way to go Against The Grain!

Date night success! New pizza, libations and finally got to see Seven Pounds (6 years later) haha. It was an amazing movie and one I definitely recommend.

I had to add this little extra. I came home to lots of packages but I put this one together first. Some of you may know I shattered my iPhone a couple weeks ago, so I ordered this special Speck case. It was FAR too simple so I had to add the perfect monogrammed decal. Ta-Da! So easy and I'm in love. Out with the black and in with the pink and monogrammed!

What is your favorite GF item? Do you have any GF recipes to share? I'm always open to new ones!

Sweet Sweet Potatoes...

Those of you who are Paleo, eat Paleo(ish), try to eat healthy or have just come to realization that you may be in a bikini in less than 2 months, listen up...I UNDERSTAND!

I understand that it gets boring to eat healthy.
I understand going crazy and eating a cupcake (or 3).
I understand the break down after the cupcake (or 5).
I understand watching skinny people eat whatever they want.
I understand watching the Red Carpet and wondering "how do they look like that?
But I also understand getting on the scale and seeing it go down. (Yay!)
But I also understand putting on your bikini and feeling like a million bucks.
Most of all I understand the difficulty of getting back on track.

This week J and I were sick of boring things and I had made 3 meals already this week, so it was about time for a "leftover night"! I would say these recipes are Paleo(ish) depending on how closely you follow the Paleo diet. If you're working out, this dinner is the perfect balance for you.

The other night I made J his favorite veggie, canned green beans. I'm can deal with them (not a fan) most of the time, so I decided to spice it up a bit. Below you can see where I sautéed half baked bacon, garlic and coconut oil. After I felt the bacon was mostly done, I added two cans of green beans, half drained. SO EASY!

I used the left overs of the green beans in our meal last night. They were even better the next day! Our protein for the night was a VERY simple baked chicken. If you allow certain oils in your diet, marinate the chicken breasts in regular italian dressing then bake the chicken in that dressing until it's fully cooked. So juicy and very flavorful. (I also used this chicken for a veggie chicken scramble earlier this week for breakfast!)

The sweet potato mash is something I play around with often. I have posted recipes with pumpkin, cinnamon, apple butter, honey, agave, maple syrup. We love sweet potatoes and they are great source of good carbs, but just like bacon don't eat it every day.

Note: Just because you are Paleo or do CrossFit it does NOT give you free reign for bacon, it's still VERY fatty. Just saying, ladies. :)

Any who, this sweet potato mash was made of left over sliced sp, I mashed them added cinnamon, apple butter (Trader Joes, doesn't actually have butter in it) and a drizzle of honey. J loved them and they added a great sweetness to the meal.

While I'm at it I'll share this lovely dessert I made the other night as well. J has been wanting to put on weight but told me "No Sweets or Treats Babe!" So I've been wanting to make healthier options for desserts. This night we had fish and veggies so I made this SUPER simple dessert. (Kids would love this too!)

3 Peeled, Cored and Sliced Yellow Apples
3 Spoons of Coconut Oil
Dashes of Cinnamon
Little Water

Bake at 350 until soft, add honey or maple syrup and bake an additional 5 minutes.
Stir and enjoy!
Sometimes I melt a nut butter and smother it with that if I need more calories.

Do y'all have any healthy recipes you like? Send them my way! I love getting new ideas!

But money IS an object...

I've had a lot of people ask me how I find good deals. It's hard to say exactly how except I shop...a lot!! And by shop that doesn't always mean buy. I often leave stores with nothing, which is hard for people to do. But if I don't NEED it or it doesn't scream "Good Deal!!" to me, I don't buy it. It's simple.

What people think of as expensive or not differs greatly from region to region. I'm originally from Naples, FL. Spending $500 on a pair of jeans isn't unheard of for much of there. Have I ever paid that much? No. Would I ever? Probably not. I love a good deal, but I can appreciate the finer things in life.

What I find the key to cute (affordable) outfits is pairing classic pieces (such as my new Long Champ or Hunter Boots) with pieces that are Thrifted or non-designer. Today I'm going to make an example of one outfit, later I will post some of my most recent finds.

Example Outfit:
Sweater: JCrew on sale $20
Plaid Button Down: Thrifted $2.50
Necklace: Target on sale $3
Pants: WalMart (Gasp, I know) $17
Fur-lined Plaid Duck Boots: Bass Pro on sale $30

The Month Of L-O-V-E....

L, is for the way you look at me!

O- is for the only one I see!

V- is very very extraordinary

E- is even more than anyone that you adore...

Ok I'll stop, but seriously February seems to be the month of love. I have spent many Valentine's Days alone and angry, or drinking with friends. If you have ever seen the movie Valentines Day, Jessica Biel and I could be twins! Haha.

This year is different, I have someone to love and someone to love me. Normally my Daddy is my Valentine, which has always been something special. He has sent me on scavenger hunts and sent me flowers. He had bought chocolates and balloons and bought many dinners on nights when I thought I wasn't going to be able to deal with recent break ups...especially around Valentine's Day. This year, I will actually be with my dad for the big day and the weekend following so Jason and I will be celebrating on the 13th. But I can't tell y'all how special I feel to have TWO Valentines.

How lucky can a girl be? The love of her life and her loving father as my Valentines this year.

Instead of black, I'll wear red.

Instead of tears, I'll have a smile.

Instead of eating away my singleness, I'll be toasting to my relationship.

Although it's often known as a "Hallmark Holiday" it's also a largely celebrated holiday in the American culture. So here's to my Valentines and the month of LOVE!

May each of you know that whether it's a friend, dog, boyfriend or parent YOU ARE LOVED!

2010- From Daddy, After a scavenger hunt

2011- With Daddy at my fav restaurant

2013- J and I the week before Valentines Day

The Battle of Commercials...

Considering I didn't care for either team last night I chose the underdog, Go Ravens! And mainly cared about a new cider I was drinking. We went to J's aunt and uncles house for the game, his family is always so much fun!

The best part of this game for me was the half time show, although I thought it was rather short...I appreciated Beyonce and the Destiny's Child appearance. If you were a teenager in 2003, you loved Destiny's Child! Putting all lip syncing matters aside, Beyonce has done something many celebrities have not...she did everything in the proper order. She has an amazing career, then got married and then had a child. How many stars can say they set that great example for our youth? She is a beautiful, talented and hard working young woman. Touchè Beyonce. I loved the show!

As for commercials I was disappointed over all. The only ones that stuck out in y mind were the heart warming Clydesdale commercial. Come on, that hit every pet owner. So sweet! I was disgusted and disappointed that the GoDaddy Commerical was even allowed to be aired. I have issues with nasty sounds and that commercial drove me crazy, not to mention the repulsiveness of the two. Yuck! But the one I really enjoyed the most was the Dodge Farmer Commercial. Although we are a Ford family, the commerical caught my attention and really made me smile. (Especially sitting in a room with many American farmers.) that voice over, Paul Harvey I think, was phenomenal.

Did any of you like the commercials? Or are you a 49ers or Ravens fan? Either way hope it was a blast!

ps, here is the Cider we had last night. Amaaaaaaazing!
